May Newsletter MbM

April teased us with some winter weather, but with peeks of "real spring" here and there. Looks like we will be kicking May off the right way with some warmer weather. But whatever Mother Nature decides to give us, I hope you all make it outside! Dig in the garden, climb a mountain, play on the beach, or just sit on a deck. That fresh spring air will do wonders for you!

Despite the continued snow, we still managed to get on a trail or two. If you are looking for some extra inspiration, Parks and Rec is holding a contest over the summer to encourage folks to get out on the trails: https://juneau.org/parks-recreation/walk-southeast

Not only will it give you a little extra motivation, but you can win some Alaska Airlines tickets! Check it out!

Exercise of the Month

Tall kneeling Thoracic Rotation is a great way to not only improve mid back and shoulder mobility, but also work on activating the muscles that help guide that motion.

*Start by kneeling next to a wall with an elastic band in hand

*Bring the leg next to the wall up, and press the knee into the wall, keeping it there throughout

*Start with both hands directly out in front, with a little slack in the band

*Pull the outside hand out to the side, and rotate back as far as you can comfortably without the knee coming away from the wall (you can also do this with the other leg up and using a foam roller or object to push the knee into the wall)

*If the shoulder is uncomfortable, lower the arm slightly and remember to try and keep the neck relaxed

The above exercise was part of the shoulder health theme for April. Feel free to check out my Shoulder Health Blog on my website, any of my Treatment Tuesday posts on both Instagram and Facebook, and if you are interested, reach out for the Shoulder Health Workshop recording from this month's free workshop. We had over 20 people come and learn about how to prevent, and treat their shoulder pain.

As we move into the month of May, we will be focusing on Osteoporosis! Stay tuned for my blog on treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis, my FREE workshop on Bone Health scheduled for May 15th, and starting this fall, a small group class designed for women with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. This will be a 6 month class designed to safely guide you through learning how to lift heavier weights and not only prevent future bone loss, but potentially reverse some of the loss!

Future Events at MbM

  • May 15: Bone Health Workshop

  • July - Date TBA: Free Injury screens

  • Fall - Date TBA: Bone Health small group class

  • Fall - Date TBA: Small Group class specific exercise training for Perimenopause

You may notice I have less events scheduled over the summer than normal. This is because we have some really exciting news at Medicine by Movement...

We will be moving!

Medicine by Movement will be moving to 1547 SMC (next to Arrowhead Transfer).

Potential move-in date is early July, but I am doing a fair amount of work to the space, so this will remain fluid until closer to the date. I will keep everyone posted, and feel free to follow along the process and see the transformation on social media! This space will allow for increased classes, larger exercise space for more equipment, and 3 treatment rooms so we can start bringing folks on to compliment the practice. I am still looking to hire a PT, but I am also open to having other health care providers and healers who have similar goals and ideas regarding health and wellness. Please pass along my contact if you know someone who could be a good fit! I will keep everyone up to date as this evolves, and I hope you share in my excitement about the potential of this new space!

Sale! Grab this opportunity before May 18th!

Some of you may have seen this email earlier in the week, but I wanted to make sure everyone who has supported me thus far has the opportunity to snag packages or memberships prior to my prices changing. Read on for more info...

I wanted to share some exciting news with you, as well as give all my clients who have supported me and my business thus far an opportunity to invest in their health before my rates increase.

Starting May 18th, I will be shifting the structure of how I am billing for my PT services. A few things will remain the same:

  • There are no changes to the Monthly Wellness Group.

  • Clients currently on 1x or 2x/month memberships will keep their current pricing as long as they remain active.

  • I still offer a per visit PT price, but that will be going up, in hopes that most folks decide to utilize my all-inclusive time-based offer rather than pay per visit.

With these upcoming changes, I wanted any of my current and past clients to be able to purchase a 6, 10, or 20 visit package at my current rates to be used any time in the next year.  You can also choose to join the 1x or 2x/month membership (minimum of 3 month commitment), which locks you in to the current price.

See the bottom of this email for links to purchase any package or membership prior to May 18th.

Let me explain why I am making these changes.

From the beginning, I have wanted my practice to look different than your typical physical therapy clinic.  I don’t want to be rushed with my clients.  I don’t want to be constrained to only treat 1 body part, when I know so may others are affected.  I don’t want to wait until someone is injured and hurting to work on how their bodies move.  I want to highlight the importance of proactive, preventative and performance-based care.  I think we should be able to use all techniques and modalities without extra or hidden costs.  And I want to be able to encourage and coach my clients along the way, not just see them for a visit and hope they do everything they should in between.  I feel like I have captured a lot of this in my practice, but I am still learning and evolving, and one thing that has stuck out to me is the clarity and scheduling in each person’s plan of care.

I am often seeing people who purchase packages spaced out way too far to have the best results possible.  Now, there are some people who are appropriate to be seen once a month, but these people are either very confident and consistent with their home program, or do not have a current injury.  If you have come in to see me for an injury, I need to do a better job of not only scheduling you out for your full plan of care so you aren’t scrambling to get in or not seen for weeks at a time, but also making sure you are making gains in between visits.

I’ve recently started using an app called TrueCoach with a handful of my clients, while others are receiving their exercise programs via email. In both cases, I’m staying in close contact between sessions—checking in, making adjustments, progressing exercises, and answering questions—so you don’t have to wait until your next visit to keep moving forward.

The feedback on this approach has been incredibly positive. For some, it’s been a true game changer. It feels much closer to what I’ve always envisioned for my practice: hands-on treatment and progressions in person, paired with consistent coaching and support throughout your entire plan of care.

I’m genuinely excited about what this means for your progress and results. At the same time, the added programming and ongoing communication require a significant investment of time on my end—time that I believe is essential to helping you achieve the best outcomes.

Because of this, I’m shifting away from per-visit or package-based pricing to a time-based program model. After your evaluation, we’ll look at your goals and expected healing timeline to determine the appropriate length of care. For example, an acute ankle sprain may take 6–8 weeks to heal, followed by strengthening and return-to-activity work, while tendon-related issues often require closer to 3–5 months, sometimes longer depending on your goals.

Together, we’ll establish a timeframe that makes sense for you. During that period, you have unlimited access: you’ll be seen as often as needed, with ongoing support through the app, email, and phone check-ins between visits.

It’s essentially like having a personal physical therapist in your pocket.

Congrats to this month's MVP, Dana!

Every month we choose one person from the Wellness Group has gone above and beyond in their health journey. It may be pushing a little harder during classes, it may be adding in journaling or changing thier nutrional habits, or just adding other components to their health. Everyone in this group has commited to improving their health, showing up to class 3x/week, but this month, Dana deserves some extra praise!

If you are someone who is looking for a little more guidance or motivation to get your body moving, come check our classes out! You can come to any of our classes on M, W, F from 12-1pm at 311 Price St for free to see if it is a good fit for you. I have all different levels of fitness and offer modifications and safe techniques to help accomplish your goals. This group is one of my favorite parts of my business! The members are hard working, but it's a very fun, and welcoming atmosphere. And most importantly, it's become a group that helps hold you accountable - because I think we all know sticking with the task is the hard part. Might as well have a good time along the way!

Thanks everyone! For more info on any of these services, check out my website: www.medicinebymovementwellness.com
