October MbM Newsletter

September marked the grand opening of our new space here at Medicine by Movement and we were overwhelmed by the turn out of our Open House! For those of you that came by, I hope you enjoyed yourself, mingled with some wonderful people, and learned about a few of our services here! And for quite a few of you who I spoke to that tried to attend, but were unable to because of prior engagements or parking - reach out any time! I'd be happy to share anything that was discussed during the open house or show you around our new space! One of the main reasons I wanted to have the open house was to let the public know it is not only the new home for Medicine by Movement, but I want it to be a warm, welcoming environment where people feel comfortable coming to take care of their health and wellness. That said, it is available for rent for special events, retreats, or classes! Reach out if you would like to know more info!
October is here, and it is National Physical Therapy month!
In honor of this, we are having a wellness challenge here at Medicine by Movement. Follow along on Facebook or Instagram for the rules, the challenges, as well as opportunities to win some fun prizes!

NEW CLASSES ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Monthly Wellness Group has been capped out recently with 30 members, but we are now announcing a 2nd class at an earlier time!

It is meant to be a more well-rounded approach to your health, and most importantly, a welcoming space taught by Physical Therapists who know how to push and challenge you, but in a safe way with modifications for all.
Classes:
Mon and Wed from 8:30-9:30am; Fri 12-1pm
The classes will take place at 1547 SMC. Class is 45 minutes in length, with warm up and cool down. Please try to arrive as close to the start time as you can, but since some will be joining from work, we will usually start about 5 after, and will try and get you out no later than 5 till the hour. There is a zoom option, as well as recordings sent out later for anyone who is not able to attend.

Preseason Program: Train for What Your Sport Demands
AS I WRITE THIS, THIS CLASS FILLED TO CAPACITY. PLEASE READ ON AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET PLACED ON A WAIT LIST FOR THER NEXT CLASS!
Join Nicole Kingsley, PT in a FREE pre-season training course starting Monday, Oct 12th from 7:30-8:15am, every Mon and Wed through Nov 16th. This program is specifically designed for high school female athletes preparing for a winter or spring sport, with the goal of entering preseason and the season prepared for the specific physical demands of their sport.
As a physical therapist with expertise in athletic conditioning, my goal is to improve overall strength, speed, agility, change-of-direction ability, movement quality, and body control, while preparing athletes for jumping, landing, acceleration, and deceleration. The program will also focus on developing strategies intended to reduce injury risk.
This group will be intentionally limited to 6 athletes to ensure ample opportunity for education, monitoring, and instruction in proper movement and technique.

A $20.00 deposit reserves your spot and is fully refunded upon completion of the program. Consistent attendance is necessary to achieve the best results.
Most importantly, the goal is to make training fun, challenging, and rewarding while helping each athlete work toward meaningful results and feel confident in what their body can do.

Introducing some new staff here at Medicine by Movement:
Nicole Kingsley, PT

Nicole is currently employed at SEARHC, but will be leading multiple classes here at Medicine by Movement.
Hi! I’m Nicole. I’ve been practicing as a Physical Therapist since 2019. I’m fortunate to be the daughter of two Physical Therapists who owned their own practice, so I grew up immersed in the world of physical therapy.
The greatest lesson my parents taught me was to strive for lifelong health—because health is wealth! I hope to carry that message forward and inspire everyone I work with to prioritize their health and well-being.
My special interests include athletics, return-to-sport rehabilitation, injury prevention, and general strength and conditioning for people of all ages and abilities.
Megan Christner

I was born and raised in Sitka and I am so grateful to call this beautiful place home. I’m excited to be part of the Medicine by Movement team, where I work behind the scenes, helping with marketing, organization, and all the little details.
I have a Master’s degree in Teaching and a background in education, but I’ve really enjoyed bringing my organizational and creative skills to medicine by movement. I currently work remotely, supporting the practice with administrative tasks, content, and marketing.
And...we are still hiring!
If you have attempted to make an appointment with Alicia in the past couple of months, you may have noticed the schedule is a bit tight. I very much appreciate all your business AND your patience, but I don't like to make people wait, so let's get a Physical Therapist in here asap!!! While a PT is on the top of my list, we are also hiring others in the health and wellness field. Reach out if you fall in to that category and are interested in working in a collaborative clinic!

A lot of the group classes held here at Medicine by Movement are unique in that it is not just fitness and exercise, but a large component is education and empowering the client to take charge of their health. These classes look a bit different than your typical group exercise class. The great part is, there is a large demand for more! And, I have developed the content for most of these. If you are an athletic trainer, a PTA, or even a fitness trainer interested in diving into movement a bit more, reach out! I think we could work together to develop some great classes and be able to help a lot more people here in SE Alaska!
There are quite a few TBD dates mentioned above. I hope to have dates and info on these classes available by the next newsletter, and/or announced through social media, so stay tuned!

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who has believed in this dream of creating a space here in Sitka where people can feel comfortable taking care of their health and wellness, and, most importantly, actually enjoy the process along the way!
We’re getting there, and this dream truly wouldn’t be possible without the love, encouragement, and support of this community. I’m so incredibly grateful for each and every one of you who has supported this journey. Thank you!
Much love,
