Medicine by Movement is officially in our new location at 1547 Sawmill Creek Road! This summer has been packed full! Outside of classes and normal PT hours, we have been working hard at renovating the new location. Although there are still a few moving parts, we are open and ready for business! I owe a lot of people HUGE thank yous! Too many to list, but from financial support, to painting, tearing out ceiling tiles, hauling loads to the dump, building selves and installing equipment, and most importantly, listening to me whine endlessly as I learn all the construction lessons - thank you, thank you, thank you!
This is truly a community space, built by so many wonderful people in this beautiful town we call Sitka.

Group exercise and class space

Strengthening & small group exercise area

Waiting area with coffee and tea station

Look for our new location at
1547 Sawmill creek Road,
next to Arrowhead Transfer and across the street from Allen Marine. Parking available along both sides of the building, but the front door is facing the street. There is a small step up, so if you need accessible entry, please use the door facing Arrowhead Transfer (this door is a bit "finicky" so please use the front enterance if a flat entry is not required!)
This is exciting in the fact it offers more opportunity for
Small group classes such as Heavy lifting for Osteoporosis and Peri and Post Menopause courses
Rotating courses such as the Low Back Pain and Osteoarthritis courses
Expanded space means more equipment! 4 squat racks and benches, a brand new treadmill, functional pully cables system, plus lots of fun toys!
And much more room and times for collaboration

Speaking of collaboration, I have a wonderful addition to the space!
Please welcome Crystal Oostema! Although Crystal is not technically part of Medicine by Movement, she is utilizing one of the treatment rooms and we are both looking forward to being able to more easily collaborate and bring possible classes and combined forces to better treat your needs! Please see below for more info regarding Crystal's practice, and how to schedule:
Structural Integration with Crystal Oostema
Crystal Oostema is a Structural Integration practitioner offering hands-on bodywork and movement education designed to improve mobility, reduce persistent tension, and address the patterns that may contribute to recurring discomfort.
Structural Integration is an organized approach to myofascial release and movement re-education. It is traditionally delivered through a progressive series of 10 sessions, though individual concerns may also be explored through an extended Super Session.
Her work can be a valuable complement to physical therapy, particularly for people experiencing chronic pain, reduced mobility, postural limitations, difficulty isolating or coordinating muscles, or challenges with athletic form and movement efficiency.
For those curious about the work, a Super Session offers an opportunity to experience Structural Integration and explore whether the 10 Series may be an appropriate next step.
Super Sessions
A focused 100-minute session for a specific concern, ongoing maintenance, or an introduction to Structural Integration.
The 10 Series
A progressive series that works systematically through the entire body to support more lasting changes in posture, movement, and coordination.
UPCOMING CLASSES
Bone Builders Club: 3 month small group class designed for ladies with osteoporosis, or hoping to avoid it. Main goal of the course is to safely, and slowly progress to heavy lifting, but you will also learn activity modification, nutritional education, and general information regarding bone health.
The 1st session starting Sep 8 is completely full, and I have 9 people currently on the wait list for the next course. I plan on starting a 2nd class mid-fall, and then again after the holidays. If you are interested in getting on the list, reach out!
Perimenopause Performance Class: This has multiple components, but the small group fitness class will be announced soon with a start date mid-fall. This will focus on exercise and what it should look like as you are approaching and navigating perimenopause - complete with safe progressions to heavy lifting, as well as SIT training and how to periodize this with your cycles or lack there-of. I will also be holding a larger group educational class which my small group will have access to. Reach out for more info or to get on the wait list!
Collaboration is in the works to offer some nutrition-based classes to be offered. I am still working on specifics of this, but if you are a dietitian or nutritionalist interested in being a part of this, reach out!
The Monthly Wellness Group is going strong! So strong, I may have to start offering a 2nd time, as we are maxed out on space. This is my group who meets 3x/week for a mix of stretching and balance work, strengthening, and cardio fitness. The goal is to make the group more of a well-balanced wellness group as opposed to just a fitness class, with access to guest speakers in different health and wellness rhelms, as well as coaching outside of class. I love this group, and can't wait to get more folks involved!

AUGUST IS NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH
Stay tuned for tips and tricks regarding health and wellness on all my social media platforms with Motivational Mondays and Treatment Tuesdays, as well as some give-aways towards the end of the month!
And stay tuned for my Open House, hopefully scheduled towards the beginning of September! Filled with fun give-aways for Medicine by Movement, but also other health and wellness companies through Sitka, free apps and drinks, and the ability to see the new space!
Lastly, I am still Hiring!

If you know a Physical Therapist interested in not only treating injuries, but being proactive and helping prevent them before they happen.
If collaborating with other health care professionals and treating the person as a whole is important to them.
If you know someone looking for an adventure in beautiful Sitka, Alaska.
And if you know someone who works hard, but loves to have fun,
Send them my way!

Thank you to everyone for your patience with me and Medicine by Movement as we moved and are expanding. I appreciate each and every one of you and your dedication to your health and wellness!
Your PT and Wellness Coach,
Alicia
