As I write this, I gaze out the window at the beautiful, white, fluffy snow falling, signaling

that herring season is upon us. It’s always an exciting time here in Sitka, with nature reawakening. It’s also a thrilling time at Medicine by Movement Wellness and PT. We’ve enjoyed fantastic collaboration with several guest speakers, have exciting workshops and classes on the horizon, a free community event featuring a screening of The M Factor - Shredding the Silence on Menopause, a few scheduled free injury screenings, the expansion of the monthly wellness group, and the thrilling and completely unexpected "Best New Business of the Year" award from the Sitka Chamber of Commerce! Thank you, Sitka!

I have a couple new classes coming to Medicine by Movement! We are starting a 6 week low back pain course on Tuesday, March 25 from 12-1pm, and continue each following Tue for 6 weeks. Location is 311 Price Street, but it is available via zoom, and will be recorded so you are able to watch at a later time if needed. We will start about 5 after the hour, and wrap up at 5 till for anyone attending on a lunch break.
You will meet as a group 1x/week to go through specific exercises and treatment techniques to help with your back pain, progress your strength and flexibility, and prevent future problems. Alicia has been working with low back pain patients for nearly 20 years, and will provide accommodations and modifications to keep you safe throughout.
Videos and information will be given weekly as homework ranging from proper nutrition to help with your pain, ergonomic set ups to avoid aggravating the back, education in back mechanics and activity, as well as specific exercises and stretches based off your current function and pain levels.
This is the perfect transition for those folks that have participated in Physical Therapy, and are ready to be discharged, but don’t feel totally comfortable continuing to work on their own. Never been to PT and unsure if you can handle it? No worries! I will adjust the exercises to make sure you stay safe, yet still make gains. It’s also the perfect class to learn new tricks and techniques to prevent future LBP, and just to strengthen your core and improve your overall function!
The cost is $200 for the course, which is just over $30/session. This is often less than the cost of a co-pay if you are attending PT, so also a great option for those on a budget.
If you can't make this 6 week course, but are interested, reach out to Alicia at 907-623-8708 to get on the wait list for the next 6 week course!

Unsure if this course is right for you, or not ready to commit to 6 weeks? Come to my free Low Back Pain workshop on Friday, March 21 at noon!

Stay tuned to my social media accounts throughout the month of March for tips and tricks related to Low Back Pain with treatment Tuesdays and Motivational Mondays...or check out my Low Back Pain blog on my website!
March's Treatment tip is "Beginning phases of core stability."

Today's treatment is training of the Transversus Abdominis (TA). When we talk about "core training," this is a large topic. There are many different important muscles involved in your "core." I like to work with people on the importance of breathing and how this affects your pelvic floor, but for sake of time on a social media platform, we will jump to the TA. Focusing on just one of the muscles such as the TA is not going to give you functional strength, but I like to start with this exercise because it's a muscle we tend to ignore. It's very important in stabilizing your spine. Take a peek at the video with education on TA activation, as well as some easy progressions.
Maybe you are one of the very few lucky folks that hasn't struggled with low back pain. I have another course with a similar set-up focusing on knee and hip osteoarthritis. More info on this coming in April!
There are some other fun, and exciting new events and classes on the horizon. Follow me on social media for sneak peeks and early reveals. And don't forget with the upcoming internet outage, you can always contact me via phone or text at 907-623-8708 for any scheduling or questions.
Thanks for all your support! I look forward to working with you as a Physical Therapy client, strength training or coaching, or at any of my classes! Until then, get outside in that crazy Sitka Spring weather!
Much love,
Alicia, your PT and Wellness Coach
